Beyond Visible Light
3. Radio Waves, Microwaves, and the X-Ray Vision Fantasy
Beyond the visible spectrum lies a whole host of other frequencies, including radio waves, microwaves, infrared radiation, ultraviolet radiation, X-rays, and gamma rays. These frequencies are invisible to the naked eye, but that doesn't mean they don't exist or that we can't detect them. We just need different tools.
For example, radio waves are used for communication, and we detect them with antennas. Microwaves are used for cooking and communication, and we detect them with microwave receivers. Infrared radiation is emitted by heat sources, and we can detect it with thermal cameras. Ultraviolet radiation is emitted by the sun, and we can detect it with special sensors.
X-rays are used in medical imaging, and we detect them with X-ray detectors. Remember those cool X-ray specs from comic books? Sadly, real X-ray vision isnt a thing (yet!).
These frequencies, though invisible, are all around us, playing crucial roles in our technology and the natural world. While we can't see them directly, we can detect their presence and harness their power.
